August 3 - Tobacco Awareness Event
Area teens are currently organizing a fun and interactive tobacco awareness and prevention street marketing event! The event will take place at the Bremer County Fair on
Tuesday, August 3 from 3 to 5 p.m.
and will include games and prizes.
The idea for the event started when three Waverly teens attended the Tenth Annual “Break the Connection” – Just Eliminate Lies (JEL) Summit, June 17 through 19 at Central College in Pella. “The JEL Summit was one of the best learning experiences I have ever had. It made me get fired up and excited for the street marketing events to come,” stated Jamie Schweer, W-SR High School JEL president. Tara Marks and Sara Kallenberger of W-SR high school also attended.
Over 400,000 people will die of smoking-related causes this year alone. JEL is a group of thousands of Iowa youth dedicated to teaching teens about the methods tobacco companies are using to get teens hooked on their products. JEL also focuses on spreading the word on the dangers of tobacco use and secondhand smoke.
JEL activities and other tobacco use prevention and control activities are funded by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Division of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control.
The JEL group will also be distributing Smoke-Free Home and Car Pledge cards at the event. For more information about JEL, call Waverly Health Center community health at (319) 483-1361.
