History of Waverly Health Center
      The Waverly Health Center is not just a building. As a person has a life history, so does this hospital. It is a history of service by people, who have by their work for others left a part of themselves behind, a tradition which is rich and worthwhile. The present building speaks only for a short period of time out of the scores of years the hospital has "lived." Please join us as we recount a brief biography of that life.

     The story begins back in 1899 when Miss Nana Colby prepared her home for use as a hospital. It was in this small hospital, really a home fitted to provide medical services, that Dr. Sparks, the father of Dr. E. F. Sparks, performed the first surgical operation in Bremer County. But this hospital was not to survive for long. Miss Colby left Waverly in 1901, and with her departure, the hospital was closed. Even in this short period, the citizens of Waverly and the surrounding area had seen the value of having a hospital in their midst. They now no longer had the hospital facilities they had grown to appreciate. The nearest general hospital was miles away. The stage was set for the birth of the Waverly Health Center.

     Mr. Abraham Slimmer was a wealthy pioneer businessman who lived in a beautiful home in the western part of Waverly.
