| | Center Pharmacy Offers Diabetic Shoes, Custom Inserts |
| | Dr. Comfort diabetic shoes and custom fittings are now available at Center Pharmacy. Deb Hamilton, certified pharmacy technician, recently completed an extensive training that covered topics such as diabetes, complications, assessments, fitting and proper procedures for dispensing footwear. Deb is now trained to help fit diabetic shoes and custom inserts.

| | Quitline Iowa to Halt Free Patches, Gum |
| | As of June 30, Iowa’s helpline for quitting tobacco use will no longer offer callers free nicotine patches and gum. Faced with budget cuts, the Iowa Department of Public Health has decided to focus on maintaining Quitline, Iowa’s free counseling services. |

| | On February 22, Waverly Health Center’s (WHC) Board of Trustees approved a plan to transition the health center’s home health services to Bremer County’s Community Based Services (CBS). The transition of ownership will take place on July 1. WHC will continue to be involved in area home health services through membership on a new advisory board for Community Based Services Home Care. |

| | Orthopedic Surgeon to Join WHC |
| | Dr. Linda Martin, orthopedic surgeon, will join the health center May 3.
Dr. Martin previously practiced in New York, where she was the chair of the orthopedic surgery department at Cortland Regional Medical Center. She is board certified in general orthopedics and orthopedic sports medicine. |

| | Dr. Hart to Offer Ear, Nose & Throat Services at WHC |
| | Dr. Joseph Hart, otolaryngology, will begin seeing outpatient ear, nose and throat (ENT) patients at Waverly Health Center beginning Thursday, April 1, 2010. Dr. Hart is a member of Cedar Valley Medical Specialists. His ENT clinics will be held on Thursdays in the specialty clinic on 2nd floor. | | Medicare Supplement Changes Coming to Iowa - June 1, 2010 |
| | Starting June 1, 2010 the Medicare supplement insurance policies available to Iowans will have a new look. Currently there are 12 standardized Medicare supplement plans that can be sold in Iowa including Plans A-L and high deductible Plans F and Plan J. After June 1, 2010 there will be 10 plans, plus the high deductible Plan F. |

| | Iowa Launches New Long-Term Care Insurance Partnership Program |
| | As of January 1, 2010, Iowa law allows long-term care insurance companies to sell “Partnership” plans. The “Partnership” is between insurance companies and the state Medicaid program. According to Kris Gross from the State of Iowa’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), “People who purchase Long-Term Care Partnership policies may be able to qualify for Medicaid before spending all of their assets.”

| | Medicare May Help Beneficiaries Pay as Little as $2.40 for Prescriptions |
| | For years you did your part by paying into Medicare. Now it’s your turn to get the most out of the benefits you’ve earned. “If you have limited income and resources, there’s a Medicare program available in which you pay no more than $2.40 for each generic drug and $6 for each brand name drug,” stated Kris Gross from the State of Iowa’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP). “If you qualify, this program helps pay your prescription copayments plus other drug costs such as monthly premiums and annual deductibles.”

| | The Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa (hawk-i) program, part of Iowa’s State Child Health Insurance Plan, is designed to offer free or low-cost health, prescription drug and dental benefits to uninsured children of working families. The monthly fee is based on a family's income. No family pays more than $40 a month, even if the family has several children who qualify. There is no cost for Native American children. |

| | Environmental tobacco smoke, also known as secondhand smoke, is classified as a Group A carcinogen (known to cause cancer in humans), under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) carcinogen assessment guidelines.
